The department chair role is a unique – and deeply complex – leadership opportunity. Chairs negotiate the responsibilities of academic leadership within the department as teaching colleagues and work with the administrative team in addressing mission-driven or whole-school strategic initiatives. There is much in this leadership role to listen for! Join Nicole Furlonge for this 3-day, online workshop that invites you to explore the multilayered opportunities and challenges of this role through listening leadership. Nicole's experience as a 3-time department chair and a former director of teaching and learning role, along with her research and teaching in listening as a vital leadership competency, will anchor this experience. Our work together will be research-informed, practice-rich, culture-inspired, and transferable to your work. We will engage in reflective practice, collaborate on scenarios, and establish a strong professional learning community to carry beyond this workshop. We’ll also draw on music, art, literature, and other cultural materials as we listen for leadership inspiration. Whether you are new to department chairship or a seasoned veteran, you’ll find value in this experience.
