Sam Leitermann-Long (They/He) meant to get a PhD in Mathematics, but found that he kept straying from his dissertation to teach more and more classes! After a quick detour for a Masters in Mathematics Education at Syracuse University, he has spent the last 12 years teaching mathematics in independent schools, first at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, MD and now as the Mathematics Department Chair at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, MA. His experiences as an early career educator with the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning along with a thorough grounding in mind-brain education has set the foundation for repeated deep dives into how and why students and teachers learn and grow together. He is deeply committed to the idea that mathematics can serve as a lens through which we can understand the world and ourselves. When not teaching, Sam enjoys spending time with his three children and his partner, hiking and camping, doing crossword puzzles, reading, playing board games, and coaching ultimate frisbee.
